What's one thing you should never leave home without doing before traveling around the world...? One of the very first things you must do before embarking on a journey is to cover yourself with travel insurance. Sure, travel insurance is not a fun expense to take on before you start traveling but it's definitely something you'll regret should anything happen and you don't have it in place.
I have done extensive research throughout the years, especially trying to find the best deal with the best coverage so I wanted to write about it to help you out as you shop...

Millions upon millions of people each year buy travel insurance and it covers much more than you might expect. I want to talk a little bit about why you should have travel insurance, what travel insurance can cover as well as provide a list of companies that are reputable.
First and foremost, there's a lot that can go wrong as you are traveling. There are so many uncertain circumstances where your health and safety can be put in danger. Whether it's hiking in uncertain territories and tripping and falling, all the way to having flights get canceled or issues with your travel. I've been fortunate enough to not have to use my traveler’s insurance (fingers crossed that I don't have to :)), but I've also been in many scenarios where I'm sure glad I had travel insurance. I was especially glad I had it the time where I was running down the side of a mountain down a hill that had rocks sliding like an avalanche below my feet as I descended hundreds of meters. Hey, it seemed like a good idea at the time... Or the time that I set out to Machu Picchu for 50 miles of hiking in 4 days!
(Haha this pic looks really retro, love it :)!)
There are also times where mosquitoes have feasted on my body and left me with hundreds upon hundreds of bites. Only by luck did nothing happen to me. No matter what you do and how safe you are it's always a good option to have traveler's insurance in place. All and all you want to make sure that you are fully covered when any issues may arise.
While there's a wide variety of coverages (and I recommend you read your plan thoroughly) here are some basics that are covered. This is a brief overview from travelinsurance.com.
I've done several dozen hours of research throughout the years and here's a quick list of reputable insurance companies that are good options. The one that I personally use and can recommend because of its coverage as well as ease of signing up is World Nomads. I've done extensive research on a variety of insurers and I know that there are several travel bloggers that utilize World Nomads as well (here's more info. about them.)
